Wax Wisdom is an interactive web-based tutorial designed to guide novice snowboarders through the process of waxing their boards. This 6-week project seamlessly integrated UI/UX design, 3D modeling, motion graphics, and branding to create an engaging, educational experience. The website aims to empower new enthusiasts to take better care of their equipment, enhancing their snowboarding journey.

Strategy

Recognizing the lack of comprehensive, user-friendly resources for snowboard maintenance, I developed a strategy centered on accessibility and visual engagement. By combining detailed 3D walkthroughs with clear, step-by-step instructions, the site bridges the knowledge gap for beginners eager to advance their skills both on and off the slopes. I chose a microsite so it could have a non-traditional UI which allowed more flexibility to provide an engaging animated tutorial while fitting within an overall brand.

Design

The project demanded a multidisciplinary approach, leveraging various tools including Figma for UI/UX design, Cinema4D with Redshift for 3D modeling and rendering, and After Effects for motion graphics. My process began with extensive research on existing snowboarding resources and digital experiences, informing my initial concepts. I then moved into creating detailed wireframes, iterating on visual designs to find the perfect balance between functionality and aesthetics.

Recognizing the central role of 3D assets in my design, I prioritized their development early in the process. This approach allowed me to shape the overall design direction more effectively, ensuring a seamless integration of 2D and 3D elements. As the project evolved, I refined the branding to complement the site's modern, minimalist aesthetic, carefully crafting a visual identity that resonated with the target audience.

Throughout the design phase, I focused on integrating interactive elements to enhance user engagement, constantly refining my approach based on research and design principles. A significant challenge was finalizing the visual direction, which required multiple iterations and ultimately led to a comprehensive redesign to better align with the project's goals and user expectations.

Results

The final deliverable was an animated prototype demonstrating the user journey through the site. The project successfully combined complex information into an accessible, visually compelling format that provided users with background information to care for their snowboard. It showcases my ability to blend technical skills with creative problem-solving, resulting in a resource that fills a clear gap in the snowboarding community.
