Primary is a 50-second trailer created for Krudco Skateshop that combines raw skating footage with hand-painted frame-by-frame animation and kinetic typography. Working with footage shot by Eduardo Garcia, each of the five featured skaters received a custom animated reveal. Emulating the grit of the Rochester skate scene, this piece highlights the true nature of this local community.

Strategy

The approach centered on authentically representing skateboarding's gritty, DIY aesthetic through traditional animation techniques. Krudco is located next to the skatepark in downtown Rochester and has been an integral part of the skate community for over 30 years. By hand-painting frames and creating custom reveals for each skater, I aimed to mirror the individuality and creativity inherent in skating culture.

The decision to set this piece to local punk band, Jerry Big's World Famous Band, grounded it in Rochester's skate community, creating a trailer that felt both fresh and genuinely connected to its roots.

Design

Working with a tight week-and-a-half timeline, I began by editing the raw footage to highlight each skater's best tricks. As my first skate video project, I had to quickly learn the rhythms and patterns of skate footage editing while finding natural moments to incorporate animated elements. Each reveal was crafted to play off the specific tricks being performed, ensuring every skater's section felt distinct and personal.

The animation process involved applying acrylic paint frame-by-frame, creating organic transitions that complemented each skater's style.

Hand-drawn text animations were rotoscoped behind the subjects, integrating them seamlessly with the painted elements.

Results

The combination of raw skating footage, hand-painted animation, and local music successfully captured the authentic spirit of Rochester's skate scene. Despite the challenging timeline, the project pushed my capabilities in video editing and animation, crafting a unique style that honors skateboarding's creative culture.
